Whitman students who have been received study abroad approval for semester or year-long off-campus studies will have their need-based aid and/or merit scholarships automatically applied to the fees of their program. Students must submit a current FAFSA and CSS Profile by the Office of Financial Aid Services’ deadline.

Whitman's Office of Financial Aid Services will automatically recalculate the aid awards for study abroad-approved students based on the cost of attendance for their specific Study Abroad Partner Program. The cost of attendance includes the “Billable Expenses” and “Non-Billable Expenses”. These costs can be found on the specific study abroad program’s e-brochure found in . The total basic cost includes Whitman study abroad tuition, program room and board, and an estimate for out-of-pocket expenses including airfare, local transportation, books, supplies and personal expenses.

If the total basic cost of the program is higher than the budget when students are in residence on the Whitman campus, then Whitman’s Office of Financial Aid Services will recalculate the student’s need-based financial aid award according to the higher cost of the program.

If the total basic cost of the program (including airfare and personal expenses) is less than the on-campus budget, a student’s need-based aid award may be reduced accordingly.

Yes. Students who receive Whitman merit scholarships will receive their same merit scholarship funds the semester that they are enrolled in study abroad.

Yes. Students who are not currently receiving need-based aid but believe they may qualify for aid because of the higher cost of the study abroad program may apply to Whitman’s Office of Financial Aid Services for consideration of financial aid for their study abroad semester/year. Students must submit a current FAFSA and CSS Profile, and parent tax returns to apply for consideration. The deadline to apply is April 15 for fall semester and full-year study abroad participants and October 1 for spring semester applicants.

Unfortunately, work-study jobs are not available to students studying outside the United States. Students should plan for this and try to save funds prior to study abroad for this purpose. Study abroad students who have loan eligibility may cover the work study portion of their aid award with loan and should check with the Office of Financial Aid Services about this possibility.

Due to federal regulations, students receiving need-based financial aid from Whitman in excess of Whitman’s tuition plus other invoiced program fees will not be able to receive their remaining financial aid funds as a credit to their student account until the first day of the semester at Whitman. Students should therefore be prepared to cover the enrollment deposit, airfare and visa expenses with their own resources, since those usually need to be paid before the semester begins at Whitman. Any credit in a student account will remain there unless the student informs the Student Accounts where to deposit it. Students in need of a short-term loan to cover their airfare should check with Student Accounts about the possibility of getting an advance on their financial aid with a promissory note loan.
