Whitman Undergraduate Conference
Student Research Takes Center Stage
At Թ, many students conduct original research as part of their coursework, senior theses, study abroad projects, independent projects, fellowships, internships and student-faculty research collaborations. The annual Whitman Undergraduate Conference highlights this research. Classes are canceled for the day, and students showcase their work through live talks and performances, panel disussions, and poster presentations.
The Whitman Undergraduate Conference is a testament to the value of liberal arts learning. Research conferences that span disciplines and occupy a full day are rare events, especially at small colleges.

Poster and Revision Instructions
Please review your entry for the Whitman Undergraduate Conference in this . Search for your email address and then check the accuracy of the cells in your row. If there are corrections to be made, please resubmit by April 5th. Otherwise, do nothing.
If you are doing an oral presentation, your presentation time and location will be published by Sunday Apr 7th. Unless otherwise arranged, presentations are 15 minutes long with a 5 minute transition period. Moderators will be present to keep us on schedule.
It is your responsibility to show up at least 5 mins early to set up.
Computer projection will be available in all of the presentation rooms. If you wish to project your presentation slides, make sure they are accessible in your google drive or bring a thumb drive with a copy of your presentation. To avoid technical problems, you must use the public computer in the room, not your own laptop.
If you are doing a poster presentation, all posters will be displayed in the Penrose Library from 1:15-2:15pm. Posters will be hung and grouped by our library staff. Please arrive a few minutes early to find your poster and get yourself situated. During the poster session, you will stand next to your poster and answer questions that visitors may have.
Poster Creation. Please review this set of guidelines for creating a poster. In addition, consult with your faculty sponsor on how to organize your poster. As noted in the guidelines, for best results, posters should be 42 inches x 31.5 inches (works well with our poster stands, either landscape or portrait orientation). However, as long as neither dimension exceeds 42 inches, your poster will be both printable and hangable.
Poster Printing: When you’ve created (and carefully proofread) your poster, upload a pdf of the poster to this . Conference organizers will print and deliver your poster to the library. You can pick up your poster there during the setup time and hang it on a poster stand. Printing costs will be covered by the conference.
Note: Our poster printer can only print 4 posters per hour. There are approximately 50 posters this year, which amounts to 12.5 hours of printing. If you wait until the day before the conference to submit your poster for printing, there is a real possibility that it will not be ready in time.

Yes, the conference is designed to celebrate the academic pursuits and interests of all our students, regardless of their major or class year.
There’s a lot of flexibility in both the topic and the format of your presentation. Past topics have ranged from scenic design and sports politics to the war in Ukraine and immigration. There are interactive poster sessions, formal presentations, music and dance performances, and discussion panels. If you have doubts about either the topic or the format, reach out to the conference organizers.
No, the Undergraduate Conference is designed to showcase the full spectrum of the Whitman community’s academic pursuits. You can present your STEM research findings, host presentations about social issues, organize panel discussions about contemporary issues, give readings of your creative writing, or share your artistic talents. If in doubt, reach out to the conference organizers.
The conference is a chance to share and discuss your academic interests with the wider Whitman community. Organizing, preparing, delivering a presentation or creating a poster is also great practice for sharing your work beyond Whitman. Students who’ve presented at the Whitman Undergraduate Conference have gone on to share their research at respected national conferences and even publish in academic journals.
The Whitman Undergraduate Conference is built into the spring academic calendar as a class-free day so that the campus community can come together and celebrate students’ work. The conference is one of the best opportunities each year to showcase your knowledge and creative production via posters, presentations, performances and panel discussions.
