Is It a Male?

Ventral view of male fetal pig showing urogenital opening near umbilical cord

It’s a male!

This is a ventral view of a male fetal pig. Note the umbilical cord and the rows of nipples (mammary papillae). The anterior/cranial region is toward the top of the photo and the posterior/caudal region is toward the bottom.

  • Males do not have a urogenital papilla, as seen in this closer view of the caudal region.
  • In the male, the urogenital tract opens near the umbilical cord, as seen in a closer view of this area.

If you haven’t done so already, see Is It a Female? for comparison.
