Tom Armel ™01 & Alaina Armel
With over 20 years of giving to The Whitman Fund and a future estate commitment, Tom Armel ’01 and Alaina Armel are generously helping remove financial barriers that prevent students from attending ³Ô¹ÏÍø. Expanding the impact of their philanthropy, they recently established the Armel Family Biomedical Science Scholarship Endowment, which provides merit-based scholarship support to students pursuing a degree related to biomedical sciences.
Tom’s journey to a consulting career in emerging technologies began with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry-Biology from Whitman. Building on his strong undergraduate base, he earned a doctorate in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder and went on to serve as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School.
Taking his robust education into the field, Tom was a founding partner of Quantitative Scientific Solutions (QS-2), leading the firm’s Biotechnology and Neuroscience service arms. Later, QS-2 was acquired by , and Tom became a partner in its Quantitative Strategies and Solutions Division.
Although science is Tom’s passion, he credits his success to the multidisciplinary liberal arts education he received at Whitman. Now, he and Alaina, a water resource engineer, hope to recognize hardworking students in science and help them begin their own rewarding journeys at Whitman.
Tom’s other passion is spending time with his family, taking advantage of the outdoor playground Boulder has to offer. As an avid mountain biker, he also manages to squeeze in a few races during the year.
Fifty Under 50 recognizes emerging leaders in philanthropy. Members are graduates of the class of 1989 or later and have made gifts and pledges exceeding $50,000 to the Upward Together campaign.
