Sept. 24, 2025: Our Spaces Are Your Spaces
By the Division of Inclusive Excellence
The Division of Inclusive Excellence offers a variety of spaces on campus for community members to gather, including the Third Space Center, the Queer Resource Center, the All Faiths Room (pictured), and the Glover Alston Intercultural Center (GAIC).
With the exception of the GAIC, which is temporarily unavailable as a meeting space due to ongoing construction, all of these spaces have now been added to —the new online platform recently adopted by the college to assist community members with reserving spaces for nonacademic events.
Please keep in mind that by reserving these spaces in these buildings, your use is prioritized but not exclusive. Students external to your group may enter and exit, help themselves to something in a communal kitchen and/or use other rooms that are adjacent to your meeting and tangential to your gatherings. We encourage and facilitate this synergy.
Community Stewardship of Shared Spaces
Please keep in mind that by reserving these spaces your use is prioritized but not exclusive. Students external to your group may enter and exit, help themselves to something in a communal kitchen and/or use other rooms in these buildings that are adjacent to your meeting and tangential to your gatherings. We encourage and facilitate this synergy.
By reserving one of these spaces, you agree to:
- Arrive early to assess these spaces, which are heavily utilized by various student groups and to which all students have access. As a communal space, there could be some general organizing and tidying up that you may want to accomplish prior to welcoming your guests.
- Please endeavor to leave the space as you found it (or better).
- Please let us know if you notice anything that might need replenishing as your group exits the location—as well as whether or not there have been any spills or breakages.
Best wishes for your gatherings and thank you for being a good steward of our shared spaces!
Glover Alston Intercultural Center (GAIC)

The Glover Alston Intercultural Center (GAIC) provides educational and experiential opportunities related to diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism. The GAIC works to proactively support students from marginalized backgrounds by providing identity-based education, coordinating community events and curating culturally relevant resources. Programming is created with and for students, with the goal of cultivating a welcoming environment at Whitman where all students feel affirmed and valued.
The Glover Alston Intercultural Center student equity programs and resources include the student food pantry, lending library and clothing closet.
During Fall semester 2025, the GAIC will be open for meetings with staff, access to the food pantry and the clothing closet. Because of fire code prohibitions, due to ongoing construction on the porch side and backyard, we will not be able to do programming at the GAIC. Instead, we will do most of that work in the Third Space some staff will also hold office hours. So, the GAIC is back! Open for business and not yet ready for regular programming. So, stop by, meet with staff and grab what you need.
Glover Alston Intercultural Center is located at 26 Boyer Ave.
Third Space Center

The Third Space Center opened in fall of 2024. It serves as a sanctuary space and programming hub for events and activities focused on the needs and concerns of marginalized communities of color. The Third Space Center serves as a location where BIPOC students can unapologetically express their full selves, without feeling compelled to code switch, respond to microaggressions or navigate stereotype threats. The space, which will be open to all members of the Whitman community, will feature BIPOC-centering aesthetic elements in its interior design and is intended to respond to the belonging and safety needs articulated by Students of Color in recent campus climate studies.
The Third Space Center is a campus resource designed to center the needs, concerns, interests, histories and cultures of the wide-ranging communities of color at Whitman. It is essential that we provide a space where communities of color are centered and affirmed and that showcases the richness and cultural wealth of Black, Indigenous and all people of color communities.
The Third Space Center provides students of color with a space where they can feel safe from microaggressions and have the ability to fully express their identities. The center also organizes programs that can help the entire Whitman community better understand the complexities of race, racism and race relations.
The Third Space Center (119 Nancy Evans Way) is nestled on the back end of the Reid Campus side lawn and the Fouts Center for Visual Arts. Standard building hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Queer Resource Center

The Queer Resource Center (QRC) is a dedicated hub for fostering community and providing resources related to gender, sex and sexuality at Whitman. While centering the experiences, histories and identities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, intersex, asexual and two-spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) people, the QRC invites all Whitman community members to gather, learn and engage in dialogue.
Located in the Reid Campus Center, the QRC provides a comfortable environment for studying, relaxing and connecting with others. Visitors will find a range of amenities including comfortable lounge seating, a tea station, pride flags and stickers, safer sex supplies, and resources such as information on accessing gender-affirming healthcare or applying for grants and scholarships related to LGBTQIA2S+ topics. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to study, a supportive community, or resources to help you thrive, the QRC is here to welcome you.
More than just a physical space, the QRC embodies a commitment to equity and empowerment of marginalized genders and sexualities. LGBTQIA+ Student Services frequently hosts programs in the QRC that uplift queer voices and encourage critical engagement with topics of gender, sexuality and their intersections with other social identities. Director of LGBTQIA+ Student Services Shelby Hearn, holds office hours in the QRC on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2–6:00 p.m., providing guidance, conversation and connection. You can schedule an alternate time to meet with them .
The Queer Resource Center is located on the second floor of Reid Campus Center in Room 216. The room is accessible Monday–Friday, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
All Faiths Room

The All Faiths Room supports students who wish to deepen or explore spirituality. The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (RSL) functions as a resource for established and emergent religious groups on campus and works to address the needs and enhance understanding and awareness of numerous religious traditions. RSL provides programming which explores the important relationship between faith and learning—the connection between mind and spirit. The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life is committed to supporting people of all faith traditions and welcomes those who are exploring spirituality, as well as those who do not identify with any formal or specific religion.
In addition to hosting the Interfaith Council to create a space for intentional dialogue and relationship building across religious differences (composed of one student from as many different faith traditions as possible that are represented in the campus community), RSL works closely with the following student organizations, each group focused on supporting different faith traditions and student constituencies: Kehillat Shalom, Muslim Student Association, Whitman Zen Club, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the South Asian Student Association.
RSL is heavily involved in supporting students in hosting events to commemorate their respective religious holy day festivals and observances. Campus wide events are held for Diwali, Passover and Ramadan (Eid). A collection of Christian students also gathered for Easter.
Established in Fall 2022, the All Faiths Room is intended to foster comfort and ease of use for a wide range of activities (prayer, worship, meditation, study, meals, etc.), from a variety of spiritual traditions and practices. The space is utilized regularly by Muslim students for prayer, Christian students for Bible study, the campus Catholic community for Mass, and Jewish students for Shabbat.
The All Faiths Room is located on the ground floor of Reid Campus Center, immediately to the right of the main entrance, in Room 110. The room is accessible Monday–Friday, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
